| The Cylinder Calculator is a device that teaches the relationship between a cylinder's surface areas, volume, diameter, radius, circumference, arc length, sector area, slice volume and slice surface areas. It increases the level of learning to a higher level as described in Bloom's Taxonomy. Most people learn at the first level of learning by just remember facts. For example, a person might have remembered that the volume of a cylinder is the area of the top circle times the height of the cylinder. But they might not be able to tell you the volume of a slice from that cylinder. The second level of learning is understanding concepts. The Cylinder Calculator shows the relationship between the geometric shapes of a cylinder. You can physically see them and understand the relationships. And this brings the students to a higher level of learning. | Classroom activities can be developed using the Cylinder Calculator that will increase the level of understanding of a cylinder and the equations that define the associated shapes. By revolving the inner cylinder, different size slices can be produced. Students can practice calculating the different lengths, areas and volumes of the slices. Relationships between the arc length and circumference, the sector area and the circle area, the slice volume and cylinder volume becomes obvious from hands on activities with the Cylinder Calculator. |
